Medical travel to Mérida from Canada and the United States

Most of the Planning Happens Before You Leave Home

Here’s what to think about when you’re travelling from Canada or the United States, and where we can help.

Start From Home

Your first step is a private 30-minute virtual intake with our Client Coordination Team, so you can find out whether care in Mérida makes sense for you before you book anything else.

The team is led by Kathy Vanderzanden, who worked as a nurse in Canada and understands many of the questions people have when they’re used to the Canadian healthcare system.

Mérida is on Central Standard Time all year and doesn’t change its clocks. In winter that’s the same time as Winnipeg or Chicago; in summer, the same as Calgary or Denver.

Your initial intake is an information-gathering and healthcare-navigation service. It is not a medical consultation, diagnosis or nursing assessment.

The team does not practice nursing or provide medical diagnosis.

Check Your Health Coverage First

Coverage for care received outside your home country is limited and varies from plan to plan. Before you commit to treatment or travel:

  • In Canada, ask your provincial or territorial health plan what, if anything, it covers outside the country.
  • In the United States, check with Medicare, your Medicare Advantage or supplement plan, or your employer’s plan.
  • Ask your travel insurer whether you’re covered during and after treatment abroad. Many policies exclude planned medical care.

We can’t advise you on your coverage, but we can help coordinate the cost estimates and records your plan or insurer may ask for.

Keep Your Doctor at Home in the Loop

Your care doesn’t end when you fly home. Before you leave Mérida, ask your providers for copies of your records, test results and follow-up instructions, so your family doctor or specialist at home can continue your care.

Medical-record coordination and follow-up scheduling are part of our navigation services. Your providers in Mérida decide what follow-up you need; we help you keep it organized.

Paying in Pesos

Our fees are charged in Mexican pesos. Use the currency picker at the top of any page to see approximate amounts in Canadian or US dollars.

Medical costs are paid separately to the independent providers and facilities that set them.

Converted amounts are indicative only. Every fee is charged in Mexican pesos, and the rate your bank or card applies will differ.

Planning for a Parent or Family Member

Often it’s a son or daughter who does the early research. You’re welcome to help with the planning, join calls and travel as a companion.

The person receiving care should take part in the intake. It’s their health history and their decision, and we’ll need their consent before we discuss their health information with you.
